Hillman used Krugman’s "International Economics" text book.
“Trade is good, protection is bad" was the main thing that one was expected to learn in this class.
With globalization, one should remember really well that the two parts of this statement must be inseparable for the sake of preventing confusion in this age of no free trade (and no perfect markets).

Funny: Hillman was advocating free trade based on Krugman’s text book (a really good one at that time), and now Krugman is advocating totally different ideas.
